Majestic Property in Douro Valley

17th C farmhouse set in 25 acres of private grounds, with superb views over the Douro River, reached by a lovely winding track, surrounded by orange, lemon and olive groves. The space

17th Century farmhouse set in 25 acres of gardens, with superb views over the Douro River, reached by a lovely winding track through the grounds. The property, with its orange, lemon and olive groves, has been in our family for several generations and the many prints, sketches and photographs lining the walls tell their own history of the Port Wine region of Portugal. The property is 70km from the coast and Porto (home of the Port Wine cellars and with its town centre designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

The property is an hour drive from Porto City and close to Port Wine Estates. It is served by the Douro Train Line. There are lovely restaurants and well-stocked supermarkets close by. This is the perfect place for nature lovers, writers, historians, wine lovers and everybody that needs a break from hectic city life!

The owner lives on the farm at a house which is reached from a different track. He will happily provide assistance during your entire stay concerning directions and other information which will help you to enjoy the area such as restaurants and places to visit. In addition, your host will be delighted to arrange guided sightseeing or wine tasting tours throughout Douro Valley’s Port Wine producing estates with lunch and transport included. He can also give information on local amenities, shops and restaurants. There is also a possibility of transfer from/to Porto airport by previous arrangement and at low cost. We have details of local taxi companies and offer a package to our guests who prefer not to drive. Just ask for details.

Quinta do Loureiro is situated in a stunning location in the Douro valley. Because of its fairly remote location – although it is only about an hour’s drive to Porto – we have always advised guests to hire a car.

Recently however, we have realised that some people might like the option to use taxis, or a combination of public transport and taxis. After all, the main railway line from Porto stops at a station just a five minute taxi ride away! There is a regular train service between Porto and Pocinho, stopping at Regua and Pinhao along the way, where you can alight and enjoy a river trip, or simply sit at a waterside restaurant and relax. In addition, your host will be delighted to arrange guided sightseeing or wine tasting tours throughout Douro Valley’s Port Wine producing estates and also give information on local amenities, shops and restaurants.

So, we have put together a selection of possible taxi rides and excursions. All prices are as of late 2019, but are subject to change. We can provide many other ideas for trips out by train or taxi in the local area – and further afield. You only have to ask!

Examples of individual taxi trips.

To and from Porto airport: 120 Euros each way.

Local supermarket for shopping: 50 Euros each trip.

Visit to a local winery or regional restaurant (cost of tour and/or meals not included): 120 Euros

Other one-day leisure trips or tours: 120 Euros

Taxi return trip to local train station at Mosteirô or transport to and from the Porto Antigo Hotel or a local restaurant: 20 Euros.

We offer for up to eight guests, with no car hire, a package for week’s taxi hire to cover average needs (for example three supermarket visits) and trips for 650 Euros. Individual trips would be at the prices stated above, similarly for guests staying for less than a week.

One of the main benefits of this is that there is no need to worry about how to get to the house, or negotiate unfamiliar roads, especially at night.

For eight people the car will be replaced by a nine-seater van with a surcharge of 10 % for each individual cost.

Near the property and in the local area, there are lovely restaurants with reasonably priced menus that serve delicious local produce and shops for all your essential shopping. Nearby, there is also a thermal retreat which offers spa treatments.

The check-in time can be flexible. When you arrive Francisco will be waiting for you to give you the keys and the all details that you need to know about the house.

He will happily provide assistance during your entire stay concerning directions and other information which will help you to enjoy the area such as restaurants and places to visit.

Quinta do Loureiro closes for the season in mid-October and re-opens mid-April for regular holiday bookings. However, the property is available during this period for longer lets of over three weeks. Please make an enquiry for more details including current rates.

Other things to note

My pleasure is to make sure that my guests have the best possible holiday according to their interests.

The boat cruises from Régua to Pinhão and back (with optional lunch on board) are highly recommended to see the Douro Valley and I can book these for you. From Régua I can recommend bus trips to visit wonderful views of the area and local Port wine producers to taste the famous Port wine produced at Douro Valley. The house is served by train, with a main station close the house. I recommend a train trip to Régua or Pinhão or further to admire all of the Douro Valley.

We now offer special rates for longer bookings of three months or more during the low season, which includes November, December, January, February and March. Additional fees are payable for Christmas and the New Year. Please contact us for more information.

We have a strict cancellation policy, but please be assured that if you need to cancel your booking for serious illness or another exceptional circumstance, and your travel insurance does not cover this, we will endeavour to refund your payment.
