Awesome things to do in Tulum, Quintana Roo, Mexico

Mayan Ruins

Even if you are not a history buff, Mayan ruins will take your breath away. Imagine how impressive it is that the pyramids and structures were made without the use of any modern tools. There are hundreds of Mayan ruins throughout Mexico, Belize, Honduras and Guatemala, but on the Yucatan Peninsula where you'll find Tulum, Playa del Carmen and Cancun are some of the most impressive ruins anywhere. What makes the Mayan ruins in the Tulum area so impressive, is that the Tulum ruins are the only ones built by the sea, so throw on your swimsuit, check out the amazing Mayan history and head down to the beach for a refreshing dip.

If you are Tulum, visiting the Tulum ruins is easily done by taxi or even by bicycle.

Jaguars in Sian Ka’an

One of Mexico’s largest parks, The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, covers more than 1 million acres of coastal jungle and about 20 percent of the state of Quintana Roo. This virgin wilderness is home and sanctuary to innumerable species of tropical flora and fauna, of which, the jaguar found here is counted as one of the many protected species. If you head out in the boats, you will be able to observe the wild dolphins, sea turtles and depending on the season, you can even spot some manatees. Head over to the mangrove area to see the dozens of species of birds that inhabit that area.

A coral reef also runs the length of the area, allowing you to experience life under the sea as well as above it.

Archaeologically, more than two dozen ancient Mayan sites have been discovered here in various states of ruin. Evidence of habitation dates back at least 2,000 years but most sites uncovered belong to the post-Classic Period, around 1200 AD. This vast complex, Mexico’s donation to the world nature inventory administered by the UN, contains just about everything the area has to offer the nature buff.

The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve is located just south of Tulum on the road to Punta Allen. If you are already staying in the Tulum area, it is a short trip to the beginning of the protected area and then a long stretch of very bumpy road to get to the village of Punta Allen.

Visit a Cenote

Cenotes are essentially large sinkholes or caves, usually found in the sedimentary limestone rock, that have filled with cool, clear groundwater and rainwater over time. Typically created when a cave collapses on itself, Cenotes can be open-air cenotes (the roof has completely collapsed) or a cave cenotes (most or all of the roof remains). Many cenotes are home to various fish, plant life and even turtles!

Throughout the Yucatan Peninsula, thousands of Cenotes have become popular places for locals and travellers to cool off from the jungle heat. The cenote choices in the Tulum area are vast and diverse as there are literally dozens of incredible locations nearby. You can swim, scuba dive, snorkel or just walk through one of these breathtaking and powerful forces of nature.
